UKC MD Brings China Insight to Liverpool Salon

The Managing Director of UKC Company (formerly known as Language), Ben Hui was invited to talk at a recent high-profile panel discussion on the rise of China as the world’s largest economy.

The event, ‘The Chinese Century?’, took place at The Liverpool Athenaeum as part of the Liverpool Salon series, and saw Ben join a panel of experts on various Chinese issues such as culture, economics and politics; including Austin Williams (Associate Professor of Architecture at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University) and Jenny Clegg (Senior Lecturer in Asia Pacific Studies at the University of Central Lancashire). The discussion was chaired by Pauline Hadaway from the Liverpool Salon.

According to the latest IMF forecasts, China’s economy is predicted to overtake the United States as early as next year. The event provided an insight into the impact that this rapid growth will have, both in China and across the wider world. Ben’s presentation at the event explored three key themes; ‘What is China’s potential influence on the world in the next century?’, ‘What are the problems facing China?’,  and ‘What does China’s future hold?’

Speaking after the event, Ben said:

“It was a real honour to be invited to speak at this prestigious event, and it was also interesting some very sophisticated and well-considered views from my fellow panellists.

It was interesting to hear Jenny’s reminder to the audience that China is still largely ‘developing’, rather than ‘developed’, and that different parts of the UK should take real advantage of the demand from China. And, as Austin described, China is ambitious and optimistic for the future, and this positive outlook should influence the west, alongside the rest of the developing world. More of these discussions will be helpful for any businesses that are looking to market to China.”
